Team NCD grabbed eight gold medals, four silver and one bronze during the National Boxing Championship hosted over the weekend (April 20-23) at the Sir John Guise Stadium’s indoor complex in Port Moresby.
From the 15 boxers that took part, 10 boxers won gold and four won silver medals.
NCD Amateur Boxing Association head coach Junior Kauko Raka, said from the NCD boxing trials held at Gereka last month, they made selections for two teams, unfortunately team two did not make it through to the finals.
However, the best boxers in team one made it all the way through to the finals and won.
I am very happy with the boxer’s performances. Some I didn’t expect to perform; they did well and surprised me.
Raka
He thanked all the boxers, their families and sponsors who committed their time and support in making sure this event was a success.
It is our hard work, dedication and time that has paid off.
Now we look forward to the future of these boxers, I ask their families to continue to support them in terms of bus fare to training and supporting individual boxers as well.
Coach Raka
Raka also took the time to thank NCDABA interim president Dickson Samai and vice president Betan Bagelo.
They spent a lot of time in putting the team together and also secretary Diane Paliau who did her best to make this event possible.

Apart from the medals, NCDABA’s Wani Palme was the most improved male boxer, while Sila Ken took out the most improved female boxer of the tournament.
