13 year old wins gold in 47kg division

Young Angelica Kakas will go down in the sports history books of Eastern Highlands Province after her impressive gold medal winning performance in the female under 47kg division of the Taekwondo National Championships over the weekend at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Complex in Port Moresby.

Eastern Highlands technical coach/trainer Rex Suba said he is happy with Angelica’s performance.

I am the coach, but it is because of her commitment and hard work which has paid off for her.

She started when she was small so she has a long way to go but she can do it and we as coaches are there to advise and guide her through.

Rex Supa, Coach

Supa said her first gold is a great achievement for her.

The 13-year old, who hails from a small village called Johobi in Kafe LLG, Henganofi District of Eastern Highlands Province, said she had won gold in a previous challenge in Goroka, and is happy to win gold this year for her province.

I look forward to win more gold and more games to come and I am happy to win the first gold for Eastern Highlands Province.

Supa said a total of 18 Taekwondo athletes and four officials travelled to Port Moresby for the national championships.

Five were senior taekwondo athletes and the rest were juniors.

Supa said he trained and advised them on what to do and now it’s in their hands.

As a former fighter, I know what it’s like and I keep telling them to work hard if they want to be on the PNG Taekwondo team to go for the Pacific Games in Solomon Islands.

I give them advice, but to go in the ring and perform is entirely up to them in order to please the selection board.

Supa

He said if one or two are selected, he will also be happy and supportive.

It’s my aim and goal to bring athletes to participate in the national championships like this one.
