PNG ready to host professional boxing event

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is ready to host three countries in professional boxing fights set on August 4 under boxing legend and promoter, Martin Beni.

Beni’s name is popular in the world of boxing and his return from retirement to work under Oceania Fight Promotion Company as a promoter has lifted the spirit of local boxers who had given up hope in professional boxing.

Three countries – Australia, Philippines and hosts PNG – will take center stage at the Sir John Guise Stadium on August 4 to witness PNG’s local professional boxers taking on some of the world’s best boxers.

Interesting bouts on card will see current Oceania welterweight pro-boxing champion and PNG’s very own John Korake taking on Australia’s Commonwealth Games silver medalist turned-professional Jordan Samardali in one of the three professional bouts at the Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium.

There will also be another interesting professional bout between PNG’s Kauko Raka Junior taking on Philippine’s super weight champion Allan Valespin and finally, PNG refugee Kakar Ezatullah will face of with his rival and Korean decent Yun Deok No who lives in Melbourne.

Raka Junior, a former PNG amateur champion representing PNG on various international boxing events including Commonwealth and Pacific Games, said there was little hope for boxing when no one bothered to help promote the local fighters.

I turned professional in 2017 and since then I felt like giving up as there were no promotion company to help us aspire or build our dreams in boxing but I thank you Oceania Fight Promotion for giving that hope to us

Oceania Fight Promotions company director Maryanne Millie, from Kavieng in New Ireland province, said the company was here to stay and will help promote PNG’s local boxers.

Millie after graduating from the University of South Pacific in Fiji has set up company to use the sport of boxing to make awareness on social issues affecting the lives of ordinary Papua New Guineans.

Well, I have started this company to help our local boxers and not only that, as a woman, I have read and seen that violence against women and girls here in the country is huge and under my company (OFP), we want to help carry out awareness and help fight violence against women and girls

She said it will be the company’s second boxing tournament and she is looking forward to hosting a successful one.

Professional boxing patron Ben Micah said it was good to see the company stepping into tackle the issue on violence against women and girls.

Real men don’t fight women and abuse children.

If you want to fight, join boxing and get in the boxing ring. In that you can earn something as well as discipline yourself to be a better father, brother, uncle or as a person.

The patron also revealed that part of the proceeds (revenue) from the event will go to the Cheshire Home and to make awareness on fight violence against women and girls.
