The Papua New Guinea (PNG) National Boxing Championships scheduled for June in Kokopo has been deferred to July 5 – 6.
According to Amateur Boxing Union (ABU) president, John Avira, the championship was initially scheduled for the Queen Birthday weekend. However, logistics issues forced the organizing committee to reschedule.
Avira said advice from chairman of the committee, James Wong, is that accommodation would be a problem if the championship went ahead scheduled. Deferring to July 5 – 6, a school holiday, would ensure local schools and colleges would be used to accommodate the pugilists.
The boxing championship is set to attract more than 200 participants from all around the country.
Avira also aid the deferral would not affect preparations.
Meanwhile, boxers in Morobe are preparing for their first ever provincial club championship in June.
