Ovinou loses to Armenian

Papua New Guinean (PNG) lone Judoka and first PNG athlete to compete in the 2012 London Olympics, Raymond Ovinou, lost in the first round of competition.

He competed in the 66kg division but was ousted by Armenian Armen Nazaryan in less than a minute at the ExCel Stadium.

According to his coach, John Jambert, the loss was attributed to technical errors which gave Ovinou’s opponent the advantage.

Meanwhile the gold in this division was taken by 20 year old Georgian and World number 32, Lasha Shavdatuashvili, who defeated Hungary’s Miklos Ungvari to claim top honours.
