By Kila Nao

Sixty-two boxers provided fun and excitement when they took the ring at the Hiri Amateur Boxing Association (HABA) boxing trials held at Tubusereia village on Saturday.

It was a sure bout for young Mary Bau from the JBR club who wasted no time at throwing punches against Verigu Tau from Gaire in the 48kg division.

Bau’s quick footwork allowed her to throw couple of powerful punches on Tau’s face that made her very weak in the second round and allowed her to score valuable point’s decision victory at the end of the fight.

In the other 48kg bout, Diana Kaupa (Wildlife club) scored a close 6-5 points decision win against Shirley Loi from Gaire.

The men’s bouts were tough for the Hiri boys who received stiff challenges from CRABA and NCD clubs.

Hiri’s Robert Nana was lucky to win his fight with Tony Raphel and Mista Eric also won in the 48kn division.

Others boxers who won in their respective divisions were Nana Jackson (Hiri) in the 52kg, Raymond Simojot 49kg, Morison Charles (NCD) 52kg, Frank Hari (NCD) 52kg, Samson David (CRABA) 56kg and Tom Uvau (CRABA) 56kg and Jonathon Sorinju won in the 60kg division.

HABA boxing coordinator, John Korake was extremely happy with the Hiri boxers as it was a first time tournament for the association.

Korake said:

The young boxers have a lot of potential and hidden talents and will challenge some of the best boxers in the future.

“We want our brothers from NCD and Kairuku boxing associations to know that we have the capability of producing some of the best up and coming boxers.

The boxing trials were held to select the Hiri team to challenge boxers from Kairuku associations and also make the Team Central side for the PNG Games in Kokopo.
