Try the Martial Arts

With all these concerns going around on social media about the NCDC’s Yoga programme, I thought I’d share an option for the people, groups and organisations out there.

Obviously, not everyone can participate in sports maybe due to their physical abilities, age, time and commitment, monetary issues, access or other reasons.

However, there are other things that anyone can do apart from Yoga that also have health and social benefits.

One of them is Martial Arts.

I am not saying it is better than Yoga but it is a great alternative to try out.

To me, Martial Art is the ultimate tool for character development and grooming.

There are also health and security benefits and its philosophies give you a wonderful depth of understanding.

Martial Arts also has a sports section for those who wish to compete.

Otherwise you can just train and practice for your own health and personal development.

The common feature of Martial Arts training is self-defense however, it is much deeper than just learning a cool move.

Every thought, every movement, every action has a philosophy and a purpose.

That is why true martial artists, though very dangerous are often very quiet and calm.

I have been involved with Martial Arts for a while and I assure you it is something that will change your life.

If anyone told you that it is going to be easy then they lied to you.

Like life itself, it is hard and painful and often it will test you to your limits.

Also like all things in this world, there are associated costs but the monetary value is never more than ($)K1,000 at one time.

With the right attitude you will see that it is worth it.

Based on the ‘Way of the Warrior’ philosophy, it would not be Martial Arts if there are no sacrifices.

This can be time, resources or foregoing other commitments and certain ties in your life.

The biggest factor and measure of your progress is your personal commitment, and to find the inspiration and drive in yourself to turn up for training every time.

It teaches you a lot, whether you are sweeping the floor in your training area or listening to advise from your teacher.

Martial Arts is not about others or what they think. It is a journey of self-discovery and development.

It is a great achievement and the lessons and skills you acquire stay with you for life.

There is no discrimination in the Martial Arts.

The only measure of a person is their level of understanding and skills based on their rank acquired from years of training and testing.

It is never based on their age, gender or stereotype.

Unlike sports, you don’t need a big field to run around or jump in.

You don’t need any external devices like balls, bats, gloves or special padding and shoes or soft floor mats to practice.

All you need is an open mind and an honest heart – You just need to be yourself.

I encourage you to consider taking up Martial Arts lessons for yourself or your children if you seek a healthy, strong, confident and active lifestyle.
