Taekwondo to identify new talents for Olympics

Taekwondo PNG will be hosting the Southern Taekwondo Olympic selection trials to identify the region’s best four male and four female athletes into the PNG Olympic team.

This Olympic trials will be held this Sunday 27th September at the PNG Olympic Committee High Performance Training Center at in Port Moresby.

The event is open to Taekwondo PNG athletes in the Southern region from blue belt through to black belt, aged 16 years and above.

Tournament organizer and national coach, Edward Kassman said Taekwondo PNG wants to identify new talent in the sport that will challenge the current national squad.

The eight Southern region athletes selected will then go into intensive training under Taekwondo PNG and then compete against the PNG national squad in November for final selection into PNG’s Olympic Team.

Taekwondo PNG is looking to select eight athletes from the four regions around the country before November that will challenge the current national squad for a spot.

To successfully do this, Taekwondo PNG needs support from government and sponsors to get our officials and regional athletes to competition venues.

He said PNG will be hosting the 2016 Oceania Olympic trials in Port Moresby next February that will see PNG face off with Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific countries for a spot into Rio.
