A new karate club has been recently established in Lae and an open invitation has been sent to practitioners of karate all over the country.

The new club, All Japan Hayashiha Shitoryukai Karate-do PNG, established by Sensei Luke Power is currently in operation and already the Lahi Shotokan Karate club has affiliated with the new establishment.

According to an invitation letter forwarded by Power, he is offering a hand to anyone who may be interested in his style of karate and can assist with karate uniforms, belts and other training materials.

Luke Power, who has over 22 years of experience in karate, is a third dan black belt in the style of Shitoryu and said he, “can grade anyone up to 1st dan black belt” in the country.

Meanwhile, Power’s head instructor in Australia, Shihan Koh Beng Soon, an 8th dan in the style, is keen to come over to the country and offer seminars to students of karate regardless of style. He is also a good friend of PNG’s mentor/coach Sensei Trevor Roberts and can assist with the development of karate in country.

For those in Lae who are interested in learning Shitoryu karate, Sensei Luke can be contacted on (+675) 705 44 217 or hayashihapng@gmail.com

  3. Hi Andrew,

Good to hear you are interested in Karate. At the moment, there are two styles dominant in Port Moresby, which are Shotokan and Kyokushin.

If you wish to try Shotokan then you can contact Sensei Carl Mari (ROCK Shotokan) on 73757777 or carlmari@hotmail.com. Alternatively, you can check out their classes which are held on Tuesday s and Thursday s at Gordon International School after normal school hours. Sensei Roy Stanley also runs classes at Waigani (SPACE Karate) and at Lifeline.

You can also check the same venue (same time) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for Bernard Soari’s Kyokushin class.

Byron Chan also has a club called TKU Shotokan which trains at Murray Barracks everyday (Mon – Fri) from 5:30pm – 7pm.

Sensei Wally Schnaubelt’s club (Kyokushin) does not have a proper training location so classes are suspended until further notice.

We have a Shorinryu club at Taurama but I’m not sure where exactly they train and there are a number of Goju-ryu practitioners in Port Moresby but no formal club.

PNG Warrior is in the process of creating a directory for all martial arts clubs in the country and we will be publishing it once we have finished compiling the list.
