Kassman Taekwnodo Club is a week away from hosting the country’s first ever Korean Ambassador’s Cup challenge and a training camp jointly supported by PNG Olympic Committee under the Go for Gold (G4G) program, Don Bosco Technological Institute (DBTI), Caritas Secondary School (CSS), National Capital District Commission (NCDC) and the Korean Ambassador’s office in the country while major sponsorship is from soft drink company, Pepsi.

Edward Kassman, head instructor and former Taekwondo champion, said the soft drink company would be supporting the event with bags, t-shirts, caps and other items including trophies worth over K7, 000.

Pepsi’s effort in support the sporting martial art code has earned itself naming rights to the event with the camp being dubbed as the Pepsi National Taekwondo Camp.

The training camp will be held from April 15 – 22 and will be used to check fitness levels and up skills of athletes that were identified in last year’s national selections and PNG Games.

Following the camp would be the country’s first Korean Ambassador’s Cup Challenge which will be held from April 20 – 21 at the DBTI along Taurama Road in East Boroko.

The tournament will be used to identify the country’s train on squad for the mini Pacific Games in Walllis and Futuna.

Kassman said eight provinces have acknowledged their attendance to the event including Bougainville, East New Britain, New Ireland, Morobe, Western Highlands, Central, Western and National Capital District (NCD).

He also said officials from and clubs within NCD including Stone’s Taekwondo, Socay Tang Soo Do, Motu Koita, Faith and Kassman’s would be helping to organise and run the tournament.

A course for referees and point scorers will be held on Saturday at the DBTI Hall from 10am and clubs are welcome to send their senior instructors, he added.

Registration for the tournament is still open and Kassman said other martial arts clubs are welcome to attend.
