Champions breeding champions

Many great boxers start young and two big names in Papua New Guinea (PNG) boxing are giving the chance for young pugilists to learn the art and hone their skills at the Socay Boxing Club in Hohola.

Junior Kauko Raga and former Olympian Jack Willie are conducting a coach program for young and novice pugilists. The program aims to develop young talent in the sweet science of boxing.

Kauko, a champion in the 52kg division and gold medalist in the Pacific Games, said the program aims to teach young boxers to become skillful and talented when they step into the ring.

He said it was a big task for young children but with the proper support from parents and the family, it would be worthwhile activity to keep them away from the unwanted stuff. He also believes the program can be used to bring the message of Violence against Women and Stop Drugs to the young kids.

He said the training instills discipline which stays with a person whether they continue with the sport or change codes.

The program is conducted on Wednesdays (3:30 – 4:30pm) and on Saturdays (3 – 4pm), and organizations interested in supporting this worthwhile activity can contact Kauko (7227 9340) or Jack Willie.
