Bulolo to host national amateur boxing titles

Bulolo District in Morobe Province will play host to the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Amateur Boxing Titles from the 26 to the 28 of October. The event will be staged in the mountains of Mumeng station in the district.

Tournament organizer and former international representative pugilist, Kevin Sam, said the major sponsors is the Bulolo District and their local MP, Sam Basil, with funding of K100, 000 for the Morobe and Bulolo Boxing Associations to host the event.

He said the host province will be fielding two teams and so far 14 associations have shown interest with 15 teams named. He said centers that have confirmed are Bereina, National Capital District (NCD), Gerehu, Kairiku, Goroka, Wewak, Aitape, Vanimo, Rabaul, Bougainville, Kainantu and Buka including the host province.  Seven other associations are yet to confirm their participation.

Sam said the divisions will include female boxers and will see “two days of clinical fighting.” He is also appealing to the business communities to assist in cash or kind. He said the event provided the opportunity to revitalize the economy through sports tourism.

The athletes will be treated to the local Buang and Mumeng hospitality during their two day stay in the district.
