Croatia bound kickboxers urged to pay levy fees

The Papua New Guinea Kickboxing Association (PNGKBA) has called on the 37 named fighters and eight officials selected to represent the country at the Croatia World championships in July to begin handing in their K3, 000 levy fees.

Secretary-general for PNGKBA Eddie Kavina told The National yesterday, the need for fighters to contact him.

He said the fighters needed to see him to finalize their funding and also arrange their passport.
“We are six weeks from our departure and we have only raised a small sum, we need to unite and get our funds and fundraisers running,” Kavina said.

PNGKBA national coordinator Micah Oki said there would be a series of fundraising drives in all fighter populated provinces to raise the target sum of K200, 000.

The first of these fundraisers is a Chimbu corporate dinner fight scheduled for May 31 in Kundiawa at the Mt Wilhem Hotel.

Goroko fighters will have a similar event at the Four Square church hall on their turf on June 2.

Kavina also said that companies which would like to market their products on the international stage should take the opportunity to sponsor a fighter to fly their products abroad.

This is an opportunity for PNG to resurrect a world champion, I urge all boxing enthusiasts to join me in my aim to produce a new (former kickboxing champion Stanley) Nandex.

Kavina added that PNG was sending the largest contingent to the championships and there were better chances of coming back with the prizes.

The training has been rescheduled to start on June 4 and end on July 10.

The team leaves for Croatia on July 12 to gives them ample time to prepare for the championships that starts on July 16.
