Pro-boxing gets back in the ring

Nick Calibud
Boxing show promoter Nick Calibud says all fighters are registered and medically cleared to fight.

Twelve professional boxers will do battle tomorrow at the Sports Inn in Port Moresby.

The 12 boxers have prepared very well and are looking forward for the “Revival Challenge” after more than two years in the wilderness.

They are currently not ranked after a lengthy period outside of the ring but will be confident of making their mark.

Show promoter Nick Calibud said all fighters were licensed and medically cleared to compete. The four by three minute rounds is set to test the fitness and discipline of boxers.

The main bout is between East New Britain’s Theo “Saint” Torot and Central’s Joe “Bullet” Kara in the featherweight division (57 kg).

The opening pro bout begins at 5pm with super flyweight Tony “Rubberman” Waisa of Eastern Highlands taking on Manusian Jason Hayeu.

The Manus boxers arrive today with coach Ron Knight.

Next up is Enga’s Johnson “Stone” Kapus against Southern Highlands Dickson Dii.
NCD’s Eugene “Compressor” Keto meets Jimmy Pius (Manus).

In the super middleweight (76kg), Central’s Victor Lani and John Korake of Bougainville fight for the second time.

Lani won their first encounter in 2009.

In the junior welterweight (63.5 kg) division Kevin “Ironman” Baki squares up with Gulf’s Ali Ipai.

The winners will pocket K1,000 and the losers K500 courtesy of Calibud who has gone ahead with the show despite a lack of corporate backing.

The supporting amateur bouts (male/female) begin at 3pm.

Papua New Guinea Boxing Federation (PNGBF) vice-president Rex Kuman said the association was striving to develop and promote boxing with competitions to keep them in shape.

Kuman said the weigh-in would be held noon tomorrow at Golden Rooster next to City Pharmacy Waigani.
