Karate to be included in PNG Games 2012

Karate

Karate will be included in the coming 2012 PNG Games in Kokopo. This comes as good news for the art in the country after a decline in the last couple of years. Our source said this will undoubtedly rekindle an interest in the art again.

This comes after a team was represented in the recent Pacific Games in Noumea. The bulk of the team came from the Shotokan style while few came from the Kyokushin style including former PNG and Australian champion Bernard Soari and Sailas Piskaut.

Meanwhile, Soari has been awarded an honorary Sensei status by the federation. However, his status with PNG Mas Oyama Kyokushin Karate Association (MOKKA) Inc and its international body (IKO) still stands. Soari was stripped off his Shodan and Sempai status a few years back.

  1. PNG Warrior, I’d like to correct your comment of Karate being on decline which is totally wrong. One of PNG Karate’s strategy over the years was to promote our code throughout the country by having its Open Titles and National Championships in Lae and Madang to ensure equal participation across the country. Karate has not missed a South Pacific Games since 1995 when karate was admitted as a sport. This will be shown when Karate becomes the martial art sport to have most number of provinces participating in the PNG Games 2012 (that is, if Karate actually gets included).

I encourage you to contact me if you need any news regarding PNG Karate-Do Federation.

    Best Regards,
